PSYCHOTHERAPY & COACHING

What is the difference between Psychotherapy and Life Coaching?

Simply put…

Psychotherapy is about healing and understanding how “hurts” from the past can resolve difficult relationships and situations in the present. Progress is made in a highly confidential and safe setting.

[ Keywords are: understanding, Resolving, [resolve????]  healing, progress and safety.]

Coaching is figuring out what the best steps are to get where you want to go in the present and future.

[ Keywords are: achievement, [achieve] action, performance, momentum, and creating.]

Psychotherapy includes …

A deep journey into how the past is affecting your actions, thoughts (conscious and unconscious,)  behaviors, and feelings in the present. You may be suffering from anxiety, depression, shame, extreme overwhelm, burnout, or confusion. By better understanding yourself, you can boost your self-esteem, make positive changes to problem behaviors, develop better coping skills, improve personal relationships, and appreciate yourself.

You don’t need to be suffering from “mental illness” or serious “psychological problems” in order for therapy to be appropriate.

Coaching includes …

A combination of Life Coaching and Business Coaching as you can’t have one without the other if you’re working.

Coaching is a more strategic, action oriented  approach, so you can takesteps in the present for a better future filled with momentum. Coaching helps you define and live your vision, clarify and achieve your intentions or goals, create life balance and overcome burnout, improve performance and communication, foster collaboration, effectively resolve conflict, shift priorities to maximize how you use your time, and identify and move through perceived barriers that inhibit success.

What if I’m not sure If I Need Psychotherapy or Coaching? Can I have both?

Often a combination of Life and Business Coaching and Psychotherapy is the right solution.

What is Intentional Creativity Coaching?

IC is an approach that combines creative expression with mindfulness to support growth, healing and find answers to daily problems as well as deep seated problems. Anyone can be creative! You don’t need to know how to draw or be an artist. All you need is to think about an inquiry that you want to explore. Then pick up a pen, pencil, crayon, paintbrush, or any other medium and allow your hand to move in response to your intention.

Through IC you access your imagination on a heart, mind, body, and soul level. IC allows you to bring your unconscious to the surface as you create. That’s why the results can be so transformative. And when you add love to the equation the results are stunning.

How’s Intentional Creativity Coaching different from Life and Business Coaching?

IC coaching mobilizes the power of your imagination to access your body, mind, heart, senses, and soul experiences through intentional creativity. Imagine taking regular TALK coaching and harnessing the power of your imagination. Then you have access to answers, ideas, insights, information, innovation, thoughts and feelings, and deeper truths that weren’t available.

Talk coaching and traditional coaching often deal with the present and are very goal-focused. IC is a great tool to access the unconscious mind and get to the root of the causes that keep people stuck.

Tools used in IC coaching including metacognitive drawing, gesture drawing, thinking visually, graphic recording, visionary screen, use of symbols and metaphor, image, language, and inquiry. When we integrate creativity and visual thinking into coaching and therapy, it’s way more empowering and FUN!

My fee varies depending on the service provided. I’ll be happy to discuss rates and packages with you during your free Discovery call.

How long are the sessions?

The length of your sessions depends on the type of service you receive:

  • An individual psychotherapy session is usually 50 minutes.
  • A couples session is 60 minutes.
  • Some sessions such as EMDR sessions are 60-90 minutes
  • Coaching sessions vary depending on the package.

PSYCHOTHERAPY & INSURANCE

Do you accept insurance? What if you don’t accept my insurance?

I accept Medicare.

I’m an out-of-network provider for all other insurance plans. Many insurance policies offer partial reimbursement to see an out-of-network therapist. You can call your insurance carrier regarding this benefit. I’ll be happy to provide you with an invoice that can be submitted to your carrier for reimbursement.

How do I find out if you take my insurance for out-of-network coverage?

For out-of-network your insurance company will pay for a portion of the cost. Every plan is different. Often if you’re able to go out-of-network, the insurance will pay between 60 – 85% of the fee. You can call your insurance company and ask them if you have out-of-network coverage for psychotherapy. You can use my name as the Provider and let them know that I have over 30 years of experience as a LCSW (Licensed Certified Social Worker).

That way you’ll know in advance what you can expect to pay. Getting the money stuff handled reduces any additional stress or confusion.

Here are some important questions to ask your insurance company to check out the details for your out-of-network provider benefits.

  • Does your plan include “out-of-network” coverage for mental health?
  • What’s your annual deductible for mental health benefits?
  • What’s your co-insurance (the co-pay that you will pay per session)?
  • Is there a limit on the number of sessions your plan will cover per year?
  • Is there a limit on out-of-pocket expenses per year?
  • Does your plan require pre-authorization for psychotherapy?
  • What’s the polic year (i.e. Jan 1 – Dec 31)?
  • What’s the reasonable and customary fee (the amount that your plan determines is the normal range of payment within a given geographic area)? To find out the reasonable and customary fee, the representative may ask for a Clinical Procedure Terminology (CPT) code for the service you plan to receive. Please note that the CPT codes for services are as follows: 90791 (for the first session) 90834 & 90837 (used for ongoing psychotherapy), 90847 (used for family/couples psychotherapy), 90853 (used for group psychotherapy).

ADDITIONAL PSYCHOTHERAPY QUESTIONS

Can psychotherapy help? Why would I pay for therapy if I can talk to a smart and caring friend?

Friends and family can be great for advice and also for ongoing support. Yet often you want more than advice. And your family and friends may be tired of hearing the same complaints over and over again. Sound familiar?
Getting guidance from an experienced professional can help you identify what the real problem is, without judgment. You’ll benefit from years of clinical expertise, in a safe, confidential, and supportive environment for you to share very personal things. I’m holding space for you to find your own answers You may have unfulfilled dreams or chronic problems that others have been trying to help you with unsuccessfully.
That said, psychotherapy is not the answer to everything or every problem. Though it certainly helps with an interactive therapist who listens wholeheartedly and gives feedback as appropriate. Coaching may be a better solution. Together with me as the copilot and you as the pilot, we’ll figure out how you can thrive in our messy world at work, home, and play.

How long does psychotherapy take?

It depends on so many things including the type of changes that you’re looking to make, and on your specific issues. Therapy can last from a few sessions to many more. And we’ll keep evaluating your expectations along the way.

What type of method or approach do you use?

I tailor the psychotherapy approach to best suit what you need to get the results you’re looking for. You can expect me to be interactive and collaborative in our sessions. I use various treatment modalities including psychodynamic therapy, Gestalt Therapy, EMDR, and other energy techniques such as Tapping/EFT,  and Internal Family Systems (IFS).

Does everything we talk about remain confidential?

Being able to trust your therapist is critical for your psychotherapy to be effective. All that you share is confidential unless you give specific permission to share with others, such as your healthcare team (your Physician, Psychiatrist, Naturopath, Alternative health care practitioner, or Attorney). With few exceptions, the highly sensitive material that is discussed between you and your therapist will not be shared with anyone else without your written permission. In addition, therapists are legally mandated to make certain disclosures in cases where there is suspicion of harm to oneself, harm to others, or child abuse. Of course, all such disclosures will be discussed with you in advance.

Do you prescribe medication?

I don’t prescribe medication. If we decide that you could benefit from medication, I’ll refer you to a psychiatrist or nurse practitioner. When appropriate, medication can be valuable in combination with psychotherapy.
